Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity, particularly at holiday resorts and at scuba diving locations.

There is no special training for snorkeling, just being able to swim and breathe through a snorkel. However it is advisable to get some instruction. As with scuba diving, it is always recommended that you should never snorkel alone. Snorkeling is for practically everyone. Snorkeling equipment isn’t expensive or complicated, and the basics are easy to learn. Most people take their holidays near the sea, and snorkeling is a perfect activity for a family holiday.

Scuba divers will snorkel when they are near the surface, and search and rescue teams may snorkel as part of a search.

The main attraction of snorkeling is being able to observe underwater life in their natural environment. This may include coral reefs and their denizens, such as fish, cephalopods, starfish, sea urchins, and mollusks. Try snorkeling in sandy and you may catch sight of rays and various flatfish. Other organisms that can be seen while snorkeling include various forms of seaweed, jellyfish, shrimp, sea turtles, various types of sea cactus and occasionally anything else which may be found in the ocean.

Snorkel Equipment

The mask and snorkel are similar to scuba diving equipment, but will not be subjected to deep water pressure so they can be more lightweight and comfortable. The snorkel is a tube about 12 inches long it is used to breathe when the moth and nose is under water. Snokeling fins can be used in snorkeling and if needed a wetsuit.

Snorkeling locations

Snorkeling is possible in almost any body of water, but snorkelers are most likely to be found in locations where there are minimal waves, warm water, and something particularly interesting to see near the surface. Some of the most popular locations are warm, coral-rich seas such as the Caribbean Sea, the Coral Sea and the Red Sea.
